The Animal Rescue League of Iowa is seeking a compassionate and skilled Shelter Veterinarian to join our veterinary medical team. As a Shelter Veterinarian, you will provide medical and surgical care for animals throughout the ARL’s shelter programs. From routine wellness and population health to illness, injury, surgery, and complex medical cases, your work will directly support the health, comfort, recovery, and placement of animals in the ARL’s care.

You will work alongside experienced veterinary professionals, animal care teams, foster staff, behavior teams, and other shelter professionals to make thoughtful medical decisions while balancing individual patient needs with the broader needs of a dynamic shelter population.

Schedule 
Schedules are typically four 10-hour days or five 8-hour days

What You'll Do
Provide high-quality medical care for animals in the custody and care of the ARL.
Perform physical examinations, diagnose medical conditions, develop treatment plans, and prescribe medications.
Perform spay/neuter and other surgical procedures based on experience, training, and organizational needs.
Evaluate and treat illnesses, injuries, infectious diseases, chronic medical conditions, and other shelter-related medical concerns.
Support preventative medicine, vaccination, parasite control, infectious disease prevention, and population health initiatives.
Make thoughtful medical recommendations regarding treatment, quality of life, prognosis, and ongoing care.
Work collaboratively with veterinarians, veterinary technicians and assistants, animal care teams, behavior staff, foster teams, and other departments.
Provide medical guidance and education to team members involved in the daily care and monitoring of animals.
Maintain accurate and timely medical records and follow established medical protocols.
Participate in case discussions and help develop practical solutions for complex medical and shelter population challenges.
Contribute to a supportive, collaborative, and learning-focused veterinary culture.

What We're Looking For
Doctor of Veterinary Medicine, DVM or equivalent, from an accredited veterinary school required.
Active Iowa veterinary license in good standing, or ability to obtain licensure prior to employment, required.
Strong medical judgment and commitment to compassionate, high-quality patient care.
Ability to make timely and thoughtful medical decisions in a fast-moving shelter environment.
Strong communication and collaboration skills.
Ability to work effectively with veterinarians, veterinary support staff, animal care teams, leadership, and other departments.
Comfort working with animals of varying species, sizes, medical conditions, behaviors, and backgrounds.
Experience with surgery, shelter medicine, high-quality high-volume spay/neuter, emergency medicine, general practice, or population health preferred.
Interest in shelter medicine and animal welfare strongly encouraged.
Experienced veterinarians and veterinarians newer to shelter medicine are encouraged to apply.

Physical and Work Environment Requirements
This position works in an animal shelter and veterinary medical environment and may require standing for extended periods, performing examinations and surgical procedures, safely handling animals of varying sizes and temperaments, and moving throughout shelter and medical areas as needed.

The role may involve exposure to animals, animal dander, cleaning agents, anesthetic gases, moderate to high noise levels, zoonotic diseases, infectious conditions, bodily fluids, and other conditions common to veterinary and animal shelter environments while following established safety procedures.

Description/Details:  We offer internships for high school and pre-vet students: Kitten internships where care for neonatal cats is performed (primarily may-november), and animal medical internships (year round) where students can assist in post op care as well as medication rounds. Licensed veterinarians have limited one on one time with these students, though we are open to discussions with them as time permits.

We also offer 4th year veterinary surgical internships. Students are expected to be involved in all aspects of the shelter, however plenty of opportunities for surgery are offered (most students leave a 2 week rotation having completed over 50 solo surgeries). Students are expected to assist with neonatal kitten care and ICU patients. Pain scoring of all post operative patients is requested. Time to round with doctors on topics and specific cases is available. Time spent with other departments at the shelter (animal control, behavior, welfare) is required.

1st-3rd year veterinary students are welcome to apply for a non surgical internship, however a set internship is not currently available. Availability for such an experience is limited based on staff time and student expectations.

Standard large animal work involves obstetric work, palpation, herd health work ups and vaccinations, feedlot consulting (we work with about 15 feedyards from 600 to 25,000 in size), bull testing, bovine exams/surgeries, small ruminant exams and obstetrics, and equine health and dental work up. Small animal involves standard primary care services (vac, spay, neuters, and examinations/internal medicine), and some advanced procedures like foreign bodies, GDV's, and tumor excisions.

We have up to date working facilities and equipment with new load out facilities, new ultrasound equipment, digital x ray, new equine dental machine/equipment, and new Idexx bloodwork equipment. Weekend calls are rotated, so the prospective veterinarian would be on call every 5th weekend. We offer very competitive pay, health, dental, 401 k, paid CE, PTO, and paid holidays. We firmly believe in enjoying what we do, and try to make sure everyone can find time off for themselves, family, hobbies, or whatever else.
